Making STEM Fun for Middle School Students; Mom’s Choice Awards and Yamie Chess Partner to Spotlight Math Education

For Immediate Release: October 1, 2014
Chesapeake, VA | Las Vegas, NV

The Mom’s Choice Awards® and Yamie Chess Ltd. have launched a partnership to promote STEM education and help middle school students of all socio-economic backgrounds reach their full potential in math-related disciplines like physics, engineering or computer science.

Yamie Chess Ltd. is honored to offer 50 copies of its award winning math learning toy to twenty-five (25) US middle schools. Through a giveaway hosted by the Mom’s Choice Awards on its Facebook page, schools can win two copies of the award-winning Yamie Chess: The Adventures of Tigermore and the Mind Angels®  for middle school classrooms or libraries. Fans of the page nominate the school they think is most deserving, and each week five (5) schools will be chosen in a random drawing.

Yamie Chess is aligned to the NCTM standards in algebra, geometry, data analysis, measurement and numbers and operations, to cognitively develop children’s math educational abilities. The product is Made in the USA and has earned a Mom’s Choice Award as well as the School Library Journal’s Best Education Pick of the year.

Research has shown that, by itself, learning to play chess is tied to better logical reasoning and stronger performance in math. Yamie Chess adds to this by integrating both mathematical content and math puzzles into the text. I expect children of all ages will find it inspiring and interesting. I strongly recommend it,” writes Massachusetts Institute of Technology mathematics PhD, Professor Michael Ching, who is a math professor at Amherst College. Yamie Chess: The Adventures of Tigermore and the Mind Angels® is a supplemental K-8 math learning aid series that uses an educational cartoon chess universe to teach children math, and the algebraic and geometric basis of classic chess. The game meets the needs of students with wide-ranging math abilities – from under achievers and Title 1 to gifted / talented students. Two-time US chess champion Jennifer Shahade created the game, in concert with experienced math teachers from US schools and MIT, Vanderbilt, Stanford, Columbia, University of Arizona and Caltech. The company aims to raise America’s position in math performance among industrialized nations to number one in the world.

“Education is the key to a child’s future success,” says Dawn Matheson, Executive Director of the Mom’s Choice Awards®. “For parents, it isn’t just about getting a good education, it’s about fostering a love of learning. MCA Award-winner Yamie Chess embodies that goal.”

Yamie Chess® earned the company’s highest honor – a Gold Honoring Excellence award – in March 2014. It has since won a number of other accolades, including the National Parenting Center’s Seal of Approval, School Library Journal Best Education Pick of the year,l and Dr. Toy’s Best Vacation Toy 2014.

Yamie Chess Ltd’s home state of Nevada is rated at a disappointing 43rd place – below the national average – according to Harvard University’s K-12 report (2013). “Yamie Chess® does more than offer a credible math learning aid. It gives parents and teachers a valid strategy to improve math education, either at home or school.” says Tunde Reid-Kapo. “We need to put American math performance in schools firmly where it belongs – leading the world and top of the class!”

Matheson agrees wholeheartedly. “As a company dedicated to helping families, ‘pay it forward’ is a way of life for us, not a slogan,” explains Matheson. “That is why this partnership is such a great fit. We are honored to be working with Yamie Chess® to get its award-winning game in the hands of students in need.”

The Mom’s Choice Awards has strict ethical standards for its Judges. Evaluators are required to donate the products they’ve reviewed to nonprofits, which often include schools and libraries.

To help promote and encourage STEM learning, the two companies have partnered to create a Facebook Giveaway during October 2014. To be a valid entry, Fans must explain why their school / school library is deserving of winning the game sets.

Five winners will be randomly selected each week over the 5-week span of the contest.

Made in America using 100% U.S. labor and 98% U.S. materials sourced from America’s heartland, Yamie Chess’s educational math learning aids have a critical gap to fill in the educational marketplace to combat math phobia, and enable schoolchildren as young as five to benefit from a powerful STEM learning framework that builds upon the proven benefits of classic chess, advancing mathematics in elementary and middle schools.

Recommended by School Library Journal as a Best Education Pick of the year, Yamie Chess includes a K-8 coloring math comic, written by expert math teachers and drawn by ex-Disney illustrators, a tournament size classic chess set, with coloring pencils included. The chess pieces all correspond to the comic characters, and cartoon labels are represented on the base of each piece, so as children follow the comic, they learn chess through the characters and most importantly, how to do math.
